Take your crazy idea seriously and push it as far as you can

That’s what Diana Leszczynski did with this piece, inspired by the words inspired by Daniel Kordan’s photograph “Japan Fireflies.” You might get a wild idea like this—a dating website offering nonhuman matches—and dismiss it as ridiculous. Diana just went with it and created this fabulous offering out of thin air.

Could it become a fantasy story? Could it be the fantasy of a person in a “real-life” story? Imaginative gifts like these hold myriad possibilities.

Floating World was an intriguing name for a dating site.  She’d skipped over the one called Alien Invasion, for obvious reasons, as well as AARF AARF; a site she guessed was specifically geared towards dog lovers, and she was not one of those.  Floating World sounded so luminous and lovely.

The ad read “Meet your mate this magical summer.  Come to the forest of bioluminescence and partner with your soul’s divine match. Finally! Finally! You will meet the ‘one’!” She was bored by the other sites that had resulted in a cascade of toads, no, actually, do not insult toads, she thought, toads would be more interesting than the parade of dullards sipping decaf lattes across from her at designated rendezvous.

“You’re not closed minded, are you?” It was as if the ad were speaking directly to her, and no one else.

“Does your perfect partner absolutely have to have two legs? Are you that conventional, or do you pine for the singular? Do you object to ears shaped like the devil’s walking stick? And tails?  How do you feel about tails? Must your mate be earthbound, or is levitation acceptable, and if so, how about wings? How many wings? Have you examined your feelings about fur and hooves? Show me a third eye and I’ll show you an observant companion. Sign up now, and one day soon, you will shower in gold, then follow the fireflies at twilight and they will lead you to heaven on earth, and there, there amongst the whispering trees the two of you will meet.”
